Item Description
This elegant vase is a masterwork of traditional Japanese metalcrafting by Kikuchi Hojudo (菊池保寿堂 Kikuchi Hojudo, est. 1604), one of Japan's most prestigious foundries with over 420 years of history in Yamagata Prefecture. The piece exemplifies the refined art of syudo (朱銅 - shakudo), a traditional Japanese copper alloy casting technique that has been perfected over centuries.
The vase features a beautiful organic ovoid form with a gracefully tapered neck, showcasing the sophisticated color palette characteristic of syudo metalwork. The surface displays an exquisite gradation from warm coppery browns to subtle pink tones, created through Kikuchi Hojudo's traditional patination process. This lustrous finish demonstrates the foundry's mastery in achieving the distinctive coloration that has made their work highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Kikuchi Hojudo was established in 1604 as the official foundry for the Yamagata feudal lord, and has been passed down through 15 generations. The workshop is renowned for preserving ancient casting techniques while incorporating modern aesthetics. Their work has received numerous accolades, including Grand Prix at the US International Exposition and multiple awards at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
The vase comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing the workshop's seal and calligraphy, which authenticates the piece and adds to its value as a collectible work of traditional Japanese metalcraft. This combination of historical craftsmanship, artistic beauty, and excellent preservation makes it an exceptional example of contemporary traditional Japanese metalwork.
