A tall porcelain vase with an elongated neck, decorated in underglaze blue using a combination of natural leaf transfer and hand-painted imagery. The lower section of the body is entirely formed through the artist’s Konoha (natural leaf) technique, in which real leaves are pressed onto the surface to transfer their vein structures, creating a dense arrangement of overlapping foliage. Above this band of leaf impressions, a range of mountains is rendered by hand in underglaze cobalt, articulated with fine, controlled brushwork and tonal variation. The upper body and neck are left in translucent white porcelain, providing a clear visual transition from the decorated lower section. An incised signature by the artist is present on the base.

Artist Profile:
Fujii Shumei / 藤井 朱明 (1936–2017) Born into a lineage of ceramicists in Arita that dates back to the Edo period, Fujii Shumei was a prominent figure in contemporary Japanese porcelain. He is most celebrated for his mastery of the Konoha (natural leaf) technique, in which real leaves are used as stencils to transfer delicate, organic patterns onto the clay, creating hyper-realistic forest landscapes.
His career was marked by significant institutional recognition: he was an Associate Member of the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), the most prestigious art exhibition in Japan, where his works were selected 15 times. Additionally, his pieces were purchased by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on six separate occasions, a testament to his status as a representative of Japanese craft excellence. He also received the Minister of Education Award at the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition and held numerous solo exhibitions at Japan’s top department stores, including Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya. His works are held in prestigious international collections, including the British Museum.
