The lid is decorated with the characters representing the “Four Treasures of the Scholar” (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone), rendered in an elegant Tenso (seal script) style. The character for “Suzuri” (inkstone) is prominently placed at the center, while additional characters such as “Bun” and “Shi” are scattered as decorative gold elements, suggesting a cultivated and intellectual aesthetic. The exterior is richly adorned with fine gold floral maki-e, and when opened, the interior reveals a luminous nashi-ji ground. The combination of intellectual symbolism and sophisticated lacquer techniques results in a piece that is both functional and highly decorative.
