一件19世纪喀扎尔王朝的精致笔匣 - 漆面纸糊制品 - 中东 - Qajar dynasty (1796–1925)
A refined 19th-century Qajar qalamdan - a traditional sliding pen box and cover used by scribes and administrators to store reed pens (qalam), a penknife, and small writing accessories. During the Qajar period, lacquered pen cases were more than utilitarian objects: they were prestige objects, often richly decorated with figural scenes and gilt borders, reflecting the courtly culture of calligraphy and the arts.
1) Artistic features:
- This example is finely painted in warm, amber-brown tones with polychrome figural scenes and landscape vignettes, framed by delicate gilded outlines. The decoration combines:
- Portrait medallions and narrative imagery (hunting / pastoral scenes)
- Architectural and natural elements creating depth and storytelling
- A classic Qajar taste for miniature-inspired compositions meant to be appreciated up close
2) Provenance
Acquired from a private British collection.
3) Museum reference
Comparable Qajar lacquer qalamdan are preserved in major public collections, including the British Museum, which holds a late-19th-century Iranian lacquered papier-mâché pen box of similar type and scale (museum no. 2016,6035.5, length 22.5 cm). 4) Condition: Antique condition consistent with age (surface wear/craquelure may be present; please see photos)
