(Stone Adze Blade)
Humboldt Bay (Teluk Yotefa), near present-day Jayapura, West Papua
Jade / nephrite stone
Field-collected in situ, 1970s
A finely shaped stone celt from the Humboldt Bay region of West Papua, field-collected in situ during the 1970s.
Carefully ground and polished from dense green stone (commonly identified as jade or nephrite), the blade exhibits a classic elongated oval form with gently tapering sides and a well-defined cutting edge. The surface shows extensive smoothing from both manufacture and prolonged use, with areas of soft wear consistent with handling and hafting.
Stone celts of this type were prestige tools in the Humboldt Bay and wider Cenderawasih Bay region. Beyond their practical function as adze blades for woodworking and canoe construction, finely polished examples also carried social and ceremonial value. In many Papuan societies, such objects functioned as heirlooms, exchange valuables, or symbols of status and ancestral continuity.
The stone displays natural inclusions and subtle tonal variation ranging from pale green to deeper olive hues. Minor edge wear and surface abrasion correspond to age and authentic use. No modern alterations observed.
Field-collected in situ in the Humboldt Bay area (near present-day Jayapura), West Papua, during the 1970s.
An elegant and historically resonant example of Papuan lithic craftsmanship, combining material beauty with cultural significance.
