A complete smoking set comprising a kiseru’zutsu 煙管筒 (pipe case) and tabako’ire 煙草入 (tobacco pouch). The kiseru’zutsu 煙管筒 (pipe case) of muso’zutsu form and crafted from kurogaki wood (black persimmon) inlaid in silver and gold takazôgan 高象嵌. The kiseruzutsu is of muso’zutsu form and crafted from kurogaki (black persimmon) wood, richly inlaid in silver and gold takazôgan 高象嵌. The decoration depicts a foreign figure with elongated legs, curly hair, a short beard, and long earlobes. He wears short trousers and wooden geta, holds a mallet, and shades his eyes with one hand as he gazes into the distance. The upper rim is mounted with a silver collar, and the cord attachment is formed as a subtly shaped double gourd in gold. The top mount is further adorned with a small applied silver and gold Japanese flag motif. The case is fitted with a dark silk cord, terminating in a large green malachite ojime. The accompanying dark brown leather tabako’ire is fitted with a silver mae’kanagu front fitting, modelled as the pair of yôkai Ashinaga-tenaga 足長手長 (“Long Legs and Long Arms”). The metal mount retains traces of gilding. Period: Japan, late Edo period (first half 19th century). Kiseru'zutsu: Length 23 cm, Width 3 cm, Depth 2 cm. Tabako'ire: Length 13 cm, Width 8 cm, Depth 3.5 cm. In very good condition, with light traces of age and use consistent with the material.
