Bronze censer (incense burner) with foo dog finial – 20th century
A finely cast Chinese bronze incense burner dating to the 20th century, after earlier Qing dynasty models. The censer stands on three cabriole legs and is decorated with elegant lotus scrolls in relief around the body. The pierced cover is surmounted by a lively sculpted foo dog finial.
The modelling is crisp and well balanced, with good depth in the relief decoration. The openwork lid is finely executed and allows the incense smoke to escape beautifully during use. The surface shows a warm, naturally aged patina, consistent with 20th century bronze, with minor wear and oxidation in places, as expected with age.
This type of incense burner was used in domestic altars and scholar’s interiors and forms a classic element of the Chinese literati tradition. A very decorative and atmospheric piece for any interior or collection of Asian works of art.
Symbolism (short explanation):
The foo dog (lion) symbolizes protection and guardianship. The lotus scrolls represent purity, renewal and spiritual harmony.
