"The Brighton Belle became one of the world's best known train services although at the beginning in 1881, the 53 miles (82 kilometers) between London and Brighton seemed an odd location to select the route for the country's first truly luxury train service. Following an inaugural run on the 5th December 1881 a Pullman service from the capital to the south coast offered an upper class drawing room atmosphere in which passengers could relax in restful surroundings (not all that different for many of the parlours of their own homes) and in more spacious compartments."
