Suiseki is a Japanese cultural and hobby involving the appreciation of indoor rocks. Natural stones are placed on pedestals or in water basins, surrounded by sand.
The term "suiseki" (water stones) is derived from the fact that sprinkling water on stones in a water basin deepens their color, making them appear more beautiful. Another theory is that it is an abbreviation of "sansuiseki" (mountain water stones) or "sansuikeiseki" (mountain water stones), which were highly valued as alcove ornaments at tea ceremonies during the aristocratic and samurai periods in Japan, as stones that evoke the feeling of landscapes. This is a truly beautiful piece, as most of the ornamental stones used before the Meiji period were landscape stones.
