The smooth finish allows the contrast between the dark base and the reddish patterns to emerge clearly. On either side, the vase is fitted with dragon-head handles, each biting a loose ring. This motif, derived from ancient Chinese bronzes and long adopted into Japanese metalwork, appears here as stylized beast-head ears with freely moving rings. The handles frame the rounded body and introduce a measured sense of movement within the overall form.
