This inkstone box dates from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period.
It features maki-e (lacquerware) detailing a magnificent horse/warhorse frolicking in a river.
Be sure to get one this year, the Year of the Horse.
The horse's body is decorated with silver maki-e (lacquerware),
depicting the horse's fine fur and ornaments in great detail.
Ultra-fine maki-e lines are a characteristic of Edo period artisans.
The gold and silver coloring of the grass leaves is thought to represent the season, probably autumn.
The maki-e is applied to every corner of the interior.
It is in very good condition.
There is no visible peeling of the maki-e.
The lid is slightly bent. Please see the photo taken from the side.
We do not believe this will affect its usability.
Please forgive this as it is an old item.
It comes with a dedicated wooden box. The wooden box has wooden stakes, a characteristic of the Edo period.
Be sure to get your hands on this horse inkstone box this year, the Year of the Horse.
Also makes a great gift.
