Ceremonial Neckrest – Santa Catalina Island – Solomon Islands – Discovered 1991 – Sacred Boathouse Provenance
An authentic wooden neckrest discovered in 1991 on Santa Catalina Island, Solomon Islands, preserved within a sacred canoe house (boathouse).
Neckrests in parts of the Solomon Islands were both practical and ceremonial objects. Beyond their function as head supports during rest, certain examples held ritual significance and were kept within sacred men’s houses or canoe houses—spaces deeply connected to ancestral power, seafaring identity, and community authority.
The association with a sacred boathouse context adds important cultural depth. In island societies where canoes symbolised lineage, prestige, and spiritual continuity, objects housed within these structures carried heightened meaning.
The form is balanced and sculptural, with surface wear consistent with age and use. Its documented discovery context in 1991 strengthens its authenticity and ethnographic relevance.
A rare and evocative example of Solomon Islands material culture with strong ceremonial provenance
