【Product details】
This is a sculptural lidded ceramic work by Sakata Jinnai, one of the leading contemporary artists associated with Mashiko ware. Inspired by the traditional Japanese donabe (clay pot) form, it retains the familiar silhouette of functional cookware, yet it is created as a sophisticated contemporary object intended for display or ceremonial use. It also functions as a serving plate.
The entire surface is shaped with bold horizontal ribbed texture, bringing out the raw vitality of the clay. The extended side handles are particularly striking, combining the primitive strength of ancient earthenware with a refined modern balance. The exterior has a warm cream tone with a matte, straw-ash glaze-like appearance, while the interior is finished with a smooth sheen and shows delicate crackle patterns, adding depth and quiet character to the piece. The underside bears a clear impressed seal by the artist.
Mashiko ware originated in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and has long been celebrated for its earthy texture, durability, and warm handmade character. Jinnai Sakata is known for respecting tradition while continuously challenging new forms, and this work reflects that distinctive artistic spirit.
