Perry's return voyage and the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States (March) decided the opening of the country. Furthermore, major earthquakes and tsunamis struck in rapid succession, including the Iga Earthquake (June) and the Ansei Tōkai and Nankai Earthquakes (November, the origin of the “Inamura no Hi” anecdote). On November 27th, the era name was changed to Ansei.
