一件木雕作品 - Guro - 象牙海岸 (没有保留价)
A Guro statue, Oumé region, Côte d’Ivoire. The sculpture exemplifies the elongated proportions and refined modeling characteristic of Guro figural carving. The narrow oval face, high forehead, and gently lowered eyelids convey introspection and composure, while the intricately carved coiffure rises in rhythmic vertical bands, emphasizing the figure’s elegant stature. The forest environment provided dense hardwoods ideal for carving.
This standing female figure originates from the Guro cultural region near Oumé in central-western Côte d’Ivoire. Oumé lies within the forested zone of central-western Côte d’Ivoire, an area historically inhabited by Guro (also called Kweni) communities. The region sits between Baule territories to the east and Bete and We areas to the west, creating a dynamic cultural corridor marked by trade, migration, and artistic exchange.
Unlike the centralized Akan-derived Baule polities, Guro social organization historically centered on village-based leadership and powerful ritual associations. Art production—especially figural sculpture and masks—was closely tied to these associations and to divination practices, initiation rites, and prestige display.
