Japanese Authentic Edo Period Tobiguchi – Samurai-Era Fire Brigade Hook - 工具 古董 - 江户明治时期
This is an authentic Japanese Tobiguchi (traditional firefighting hook) dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period (mid–late 19th century).
This is not merely an old tool.
It is a powerful historical artifact that carries the tension of an era when fire was a constant and devastating threat.
Measuring approximately 68 cm in length and weighing about 650 g, this example has a substantial presence — both physically and visually — reflecting its true working purpose.
The forged iron hook features a thick triangular profile with a bold, uncompromising silhouette.
Its form is simple yet striking — a beauty born entirely from function.
The iron surface displays deep, naturally developed oxidation and patina accumulated over more than a century. This rich texture cannot be artificially replicated.
The upper section of the shaft is reinforced with tightly wound spiral wrapping, an impressive detail that symbolizes functional strength.
A hexagonal iron fitting firmly secures the head to the shaft, demonstrating practical and durable craftsmanship.
The lower end retains its original iron butt cap and suspension ring, once used for hanging the tool within a fire brigade station.
The wooden shaft shows lacquer loss, surface wear, and age-related marks — not flaws, but visible traces of time and authentic use.
Historical Context
During the late Edo and early Meiji periods, Japanese towns were predominantly constructed of wood.
Fire was an ever-present danger, and Tobiguchi served as one of the last lines of defense.
More than a tool, the Tobiguchi became a symbol of discipline, courage, and communal responsibility.
Examples of this size, structural integrity, and original fittings are becoming increasingly scarce.
