It was established on August 2, 1940 to reward participants in the war with the USSR, as well as those who provided significant assistance in defending Finland's independence. ​ Below is an overview of the medal, its bars (clasps) and their meanings. The "Cuckoo" Medal (Talvisodan muistomitali) Name: ​"Cuckoo" (named after the similarity of the image on the reverse with a cuckoo on a branch, although officially it is an allegorical image of victory, often interpreted as a hand in armor holding a sword).
