日本 fubako 蒔絵盒 - 漆, 木 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Object Description:
An elegant, rectangular Japanese lacquer box (likely a fubako or writing box) featuring a classic landscape. The lid is finely decorated in maki-e (sprinkled gold powder) depicting the iconic Mount Fuji in the background, framed by ancient pine trees (matsu) and a mythical phoenix (Ho-o) or crane in flight. The combination of these motifs symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and the enduring spirit of Japan.
The interior and the underside of the lid are finished in high-quality nashiji lacquer (“pear skin”), where gold flakes are suspended in multiple layers of translucent lacquer to create a shimmering, deep-flecked effect.
Technical Details:
Technique: Black urushi lacquer base with hira maki-e (flat) and takamaki-e (raised) gold powder details.
Interior: Dense nashiji lacquer.
Material: Wood core covered in natural urushi lacquer.
Period: Estimated late Meiji (1868–1912) or Taisho (1912–1926) period.
Condition:
The box is in good vintage condition. There is some light surface wear and minor edge rubbing consistent with its age, which adds to its antique character.
Please see the photos for a detailed view of the condition.
