八云塗黑漆文箱(文档箱)带牡丹纹样 - 木 - 日本 - Heisei period (1989-present)

This rectangular covered box is formed as a bunbako for documents or writing implements. The exterior is finished in glossy black lacquer, over which peony blossoms are rendered in red and yellow with green foliage. The decoration follows the Yakumo-nuri technique, in which colored lacquer designs are built up and then sealed beneath layers of translucent suki-urushi, subsequently polished to unify the surface. The peony motifs spread across the lid and upper surfaces, their rounded petals set against the dark ground. The lacquer retains a consistent sheen, allowing the colors to appear beneath the polished surface rather than sitting above it. The interior and the base are also finished in black lacquer, maintaining a continuous tone throughout the piece. The box is accompanied by a paper storage box bearing a label reading “Izumo meisan Yakumo-nuri” (Izumo famous product, Yakumo-nuri) and a small tag indicating the “Botan” (peony) motif. Dimensions: Box (Item): 10.5 × 14.5 × 24 cm Weight: 764 g Condition: There are surface scratches, scuffs, and age-related wear on the lacquer, including a distinct scratch on the bottom surface. The accompanying paper box shows significant wear, stains, fading, and peeling. About Yakumo-nuri (Yakumo Lacquerware): Yakumo-nuri is a traditional Japanese lacquerware produced in the Matsue region of Shimane Prefecture. It developed during the Edo period and is known for its refined decorative techniques and layered lacquer finishes. Yakumo-nuri is typically made from wood and coated with multiple layers of natural lacquer. One of its distinctive features is the decorative technique in which patterns are built up in relief or created through layered coloration, then polished to reveal depth and subtle contrast. Designs often include classical motifs, landscapes, or seasonal themes. The lacquer surface is generally smooth and glossy, with a sense of depth created by repeated application and careful polishing. Compared to more ornate lacquer traditions, Yakumo-nuri often conveys an elegant and restrained aesthetic. Objects produced include tea utensils, trays, boxes, and other functional wares, many of which are connected to tea culture and formal presentation. Shipping / Policy: Carefully packaged and shipped from Japan by Japan Post or DHL with tracking. If you purchase multiple items, combined shipping is available. Please contact us if needed. Import duties, VAT (or equivalent consumption tax), and any other fees are the responsibility of the buyer. Please inspect the item upon arrival and contact us via Catawiki immediately if there is any issue. About the vintage ceramics we offer (please read before purchasing): We mainly offer 20th-century vintage Japanese ceramics. Due to their age and hand-crafted nature, each piece may show natural characteristics and variations such as glaze crackle (crazing), glaze irregularities, kiln marks, surface wear, and age-related patina. For this reason, we recommend these items primarily for display and collection. If you choose to use the item, please avoid sudden temperature changes and prolonged soaking, and do not use a dishwasher or microwave. Optional sealing/seasoning may be considered depending on your intended use. Guarantee: Our shop is a licensed antiques dealer in Japan. We guarantee the authenticity of this work.
