An elegant red lacquered bô’dansu 棒箪笥 (cabinet of drawers with a locking bar), crafted in a single section and fully restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan. Constructed from Hinoki cypress wood with a dark reddish-brown lacquered finish that beautifully highlights the natural wood grain. The design features a wide upper drawer, four drawers secured with a locking bar 棒 (bo), and to the right, a removable panel with a sliding lock, with a storage compartment behind this. Below two smaller drawers and a large wide drawer. The cabinet is adorned with sturdy hand-forged iron hardware, the drawers are fitted with sturdy iron ‘warabite’-shaped handles and decorative large lock plates. There are 3 functioning keys with the cabinet. The sides fitted with ‘warabite’-shaped handles for easy transportation. At the back of the cabinet, a reinforcement is placed, this is an old restoration. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Meiji period). Dimensions: Height 86 cm, Width 88.5 cm, Depth 41.6 cm. It is in very good, completely restored condition, with traces of age and wear, also at the top of the cabinet and the inside of the drawers. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. Three keys are included. The locking mechanism works in the traditional Japanese fashion. All drawers are running smoothly.
