Description
A small Roman terracotta tessera of rounded, slightly domed form, bearing a molded relief bust in profile within a shallow circular border.
The obverse displays a stylized head facing right, possibly representing a deity, theatrical mask, or generic portrait type. The features are softly rendered but clearly intentional, with visible hair treatment and facial contour.
The reverse appears plain and slightly flattened.
The fabric is consistent with Roman utilitarian clay objects: fine-grained earthenware with natural reddish-tan coloration and surface patination from burial.
Attribution & Function
Terracotta tesserae were widely used throughout the Roman Empire for a variety of purposes:
Theater admission tokens
Gladiatorial game entry passes
Grain or oil distribution vouchers
Bathhouse entry tokens
Accounting markers
Unlike official coinage, these were locally produced and often crudely executed, which explains stylistic variation and informal portrait rendering.
The portrait format suggests a possible link to theatrical or festival contexts, though without inscription the exact function remains uncertain.
Historical Context
Roman tesserae represent an important aspect of everyday Roman civic life. They were part of the administrative and entertainment systems that supported large urban populations.
Such tokens are known from Rome, Pompeii, Ostia, North Africa, and across the Eastern Mediterranean.
Clay examples are generally more affordable and were likely intended for short-term use, unlike bronze tesserae which were more durable.
Condition
Good ancient condition.
Clear molded relief remains visible
Stable surface with natural earthen patina
Minor edge wear consistent with circulation and burial
No modern restoration observed
Provenance
From a European private collection, formed in the 1980s.
A provenance statement and declaration of legal origin can be provided in PDF format upon request.
