Nio (仁王) - Imai Saburo (今井三郎, 1922–2000) - 日本 (没有保留价)

Title: Nio (仁王) Artist: Imai Saburo (今井三郎, 1922–2000) Technique: Woodblock Print Signature: Signed and sealed by the artist on the plate Paper Size: 42.5 × 31 cm (16.73 × 12.20 in) Paper: Washi This highly dynamic colour woodblock print was created by the Japanese artist Imai Saburo (今井三郎), circa 1970–1980.It is meticulously executed on washi (和紙) using mineral pigments and ink.The artist was a renowned kite painter (凧絵師) from the Shirane area of Niigata City during the Showa period of Japan, and one of the key figures in promoting Shirane Giant Kite (白根大凧) culture nationwide. The central figure is a Nio (仁王,also known as Guardian King / Vajra Warrior), a fierce Buddhist guardian deity in Japanese tradition, derived from the protective Vajra warriors of Indian Buddhism. Executed in a close-up composition, the work focuses on the Nio’s face and upper body to amplify his imposing, awe-inspiring presence: wide, glaring eyes, furrowed brows, a tightly set mouth, wildly flowing black hair, and exaggerated muscular forms—all hallmarks of the Nio’s wrathful expression, meant to ward off evil spirits and safeguard the Dharma and peace. The face is rendered with a white base and dramatic red kumadori (make-up) shading, a classic visual language shared by Japanese irezumi (刺青,traditional tattoo) art and Edo-period ukiyo-e “Nio-e (仁王絵)” prints. Clad in ornate armor of deep blue with gold accents, a bright yellow collar, and golden shoulder ornaments, the figure embodies a warrior-protector archetype. The bold color contrasts and dynamic linework draw heavily from ukiyo-e “yakusha-e (役者絵,kabuki actor prints)” and the powerful dynamism of traditional irezumi, creating intense theatrical tension and visual impact. Rather than depicting the paired “Agyō (阿形)” (open-mouthed) and “Ungyō (吽形)” (closed-mouthed) Nio, this piece is a stylized, decorative close-up of a single guardian—a brilliant modern reimagining of the traditional Nio iconography, symbolizing strength, protection, and resolve. The artist’s signature 「Saburō (三郎)」 and a corresponding square red seal appear in the lower left corner, confirming the work’s authenticity. Due to its age, the washi paper exhibits natural signs of aging, including toning from oxidation, minor mold spots, creases, and edge wear. This work is sold unframed; the images are for display purposes only to show the effect after framing. Note: Delivery to Italy takes approximately 6–7 days.
