1890 British Ceylon 1/4 Cent Copper Coin NGC MS65RB
Highlights:
1. Represent the modernization of Ceylon’s monetary system under British rule.
2. It perfectly embodies Britain’s colonial monetary reform in Asia during the height of the tea-trade era, making it a meaningful conversation piece for any British Empire or Sri Lankan collection.
3. The MS65RB grade delivers sharp details, minimal marks, and desirable red-brown original luster that is exceptionally rare on 136-year-old copper coins exposed to Ceylon’s humid climate.
Coin Story:
After Ceylon became a British Crown Colony in 1802, the authorities gradually introduced a decimal currency system to replace the earlier Dutch and local coinage. From 1870 onward, the KM#90 series of copper coins (1/4 Cent, 1/2 Cent, and 1 Cent) was produced at the Calcutta Mint in India. The 1890 issue dates to the later part of Queen Victoria’s long reign (1837–1901).
Obverse: Young portrait of Queen Victoria within a beaded circle, inscribed “QUEEN VICTORIA”.
Reverse: A palm tree (symbolizing the island’s tropical landscape) within a circle, with “CEYLON QUARTER CENT” in English below, flanked by Sinhala and Tamil inscriptions for the denomination.
Weight: approximately 1.18 g; diameter: 14–19 mm; pure copper composition.
These coins represent the modernization of Ceylon’s monetary system under British rule and facilitated everyday small transactions during the island’s booming coffee and tea plantation economy. They are tangible evidence of imperial economic control in Asia and remain popular with collectors of British colonial and South Asian numismatics.
This 1890 British Ceylon 1/4 Cent NGC MS65RB is a premium survivor of the series – sharply struck, beautifully toned, and among the finest known. It combines strong historical interest with genuine condition rarity at a still-accessible price point.
