The richly figured surface displays swirling, flame-like patterns in deep reddish-brown tones, a highly prized characteristic in traditional Japanese furniture making. The chest comprises five drawers in total: two smaller side-by-side drawers at the top, fitted with iron flower-shaped knob pulls (hanabishi), and three full-width drawers below, each fitted with rectangular iron bail handles — a distinctly functional and elegant design typical of Meiji-era craftsmanship. The frame and structure are constructed entirely from zelkova, with the wood's natural character visible on all exterior surfaces including the sides, back, and base.
