Set of Fossil Hippopotamus Teeth and Tusks – Subfossil – Madagascar
Interesting set of fossilized teeth and tusks from Malagasy hippopotamuses, discovered in Madagascar. These animals were closely related to modern hippopotamuses and pygmy hippos, but evolved as distinct island species.
Subfossil remains of Malagasy hippopotamuses are particularly fascinating because fossil evidence suggests that at least one species survived until roughly 1,000 years ago, making them among the most recent large mammals to disappear from the island.
This lot includes several well-preserved tusks and teeth, showing the characteristic curved shapes and natural enamel surfaces typical of hippopotamus dentition. The pieces display attractive natural coloration and clear anatomical structure, making them both scientifically interesting and visually appealing.
Such specimens are appreciated by collectors of Quaternary fossils, mammal remains, and Malagasy natural history.
Individual specimen sizes and weights
Half lower tusk 1: 60 g – 16.6 × 2.7 × 1.1 cm
Juvenile lower tusk 2: 45 g – 10.5 × 2.0 × 1.6 cm
Upper tusk: 80 g – 15.3 × 2.7 × 1.8 cm
Juvenile upper tusk: 30 g – 10.5 × 1.8 × 1.8 cm
Incisor: 20 g – 8.4 × 1.5 × 1.4 cm
A very interesting set of subfossil hippopotamus teeth, ideal for collectors, educational collections, or natural history displays.
