Lot of 8 Silver Medieval Russian Wire Coins (“Kopecks”) – 16th–17th Century – Ivan IV & Romanov Period
An attractive and authentic group of eight original hammered silver wire kopecks from Medieval Russia, struck during the late 16th to 17th century.
These small, irregularly shaped coins – often called “wire money” – were produced by cutting small pieces of silver wire and striking them between dies. Their distinctive elongated flan and off-center designs are typical characteristics of the period and highly appreciated by collectors of early Russian numismatics.
Most examples in this lot display:
• Clear Cyrillic inscriptions
• Partial to well-visible mounted horseman (traditional Muscovite rider motif)
• Authentic hammered surfaces
• Natural silver toning and age patina
Such coins were issued under rulers including Ivan IV “the Terrible”, Feodor I, Boris Godunov and early Romanov tsars. They circulated widely across the Tsardom of Russia and represent the monetary backbone of the pre-imperial Russian economy.
Condition:
All pieces are genuine hammered issues with irregular shapes typical of the type. Visible legends and devices remain on each coin. Wear, edge cracks, and striking imperfections are consistent with 16th–17th century wire kopecks. No modern alterations observed.
Why this lot is attractive:
• 100% original medieval silver coins
• Ideal starter set for Russian wire coin collectors
• Excellent study group for identifying different rulers and mints
• Increasingly sought-after early Russian material
A compact yet historically powerful collection of early Russian silver coinage — over 400 years old and full of character.
A solid and collectible medieval silver lot for the serious numismatist.
