Title Japanese Lacquer Document Box (Te-Bunko) by Kotani Shushu – “Ashifune” Raden & Gold Maki-e – Mid-Showa Period – With Signed Tomobako ⸻ Description A Refined Example of Mid-Showa Lacquer Art An exceptional Japanese lacquer document box (te-bunko) dating to the Mid-Showa period (mid-20th century), created by the distinguished lacquer artist Kotani Shushu (1894–1971), born Kotani Ichiji. This work exemplifies the elegant synthesis of traditional Kaga maki-e craftsmanship and refined modern design sensibilities for which the artist is known. ⸻ “Ashifune” – A Classical Poetic Motif The lid is adorned with the traditional “Ashifune” (Reeds and Boat) motif—an image deeply rooted in Japanese classical literature and long associated with the decorative aesthetics of the Rinpa school. Slender reeds are rendered in delicate gold maki-e, rising gracefully across the surface. The gently floating boat and flowing water are highlighted with luminous raden (mother-of-pearl) inlays, revealing subtle iridescent tones of green, blue, and violet as light shifts across the surface. The sail, executed in substantial metal inlay, introduces a bold tactile contrast against the deep, mirror-like black urushi lacquer ground—creating a sophisticated interplay of texture, reflection, and depth. ⸻ Mastery of Material Harmony Kotani Shushu, active in Ishikawa Prefecture and associated with the Kaga lacquer tradition, was celebrated for harmonizing shell, metal, and gold powder with exceptional precision. In this piece, the flawless black lacquer surface serves as a dramatic stage upon which gold, shell, and metal coexist in balanced composition—demonstrating the artist’s control of restraint and ornament. ⸻ Original Signed Tomobako The work is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed: 「葦舟蒔絵手文庫」 (Ashifune Maki-e Te-bunko) and signed/sealed “Shushu,” providing confirmation of authorship and provenance. ⸻ Dimensions • Length: 30.5 cm • Width: 24.5 cm • Height: 11.5 cm ⸻ Condition Preserved in excellent vintage condition. • The lacquer retains a deep, lustrous gloss with only minimal age-appropriate micro-scratches. • All raden and metal inlays remain intact and securely set. • No cracks, chips, or visible restorations. • The original tomobako shows natural aging and a fine patina consistent with its period. A refined and well-preserved example of Mid-Showa decorative lacquer art, ideal for collectors of Japanese maki-e and Rinpa-inspired design. We will use Japan Post or for shipping. Title

Japanese Lacquer Document Box (Te-Bunko) by Kotani Shushu – “Ashifune” Raden & Gold Maki-e – Mid-Showa Period – With Signed Tomobako

Description

A Refined Example of Mid-Showa Lacquer Art

An exceptional Japanese lacquer document box (te-bunko) dating to the Mid-Showa period (mid-20th century), created by the distinguished lacquer artist Kotani Shushu (1894–1971), born Kotani Ichiji.

This work exemplifies the elegant synthesis of traditional Kaga maki-e craftsmanship and refined modern design sensibilities for which the artist is known.

“Ashifune” – A Classical Poetic Motif

The lid is adorned with the traditional “Ashifune” (Reeds and Boat) motif—an image deeply rooted in Japanese classical literature and long associated with the decorative aesthetics of the Rinpa school.

Mastery of Material Harmony

Kotani Shushu, active in Ishikawa Prefecture and associated with the Kaga lacquer tradition, was celebrated for harmonizing shell, metal, and gold powder with exceptional precision.

In this piece, the flawless black lacquer surface serves as a dramatic stage upon which gold, shell, and metal coexist in balanced composition—demonstrating the artist’s control of restraint and ornament.

Original Signed Tomobako

The work is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed:

「葦舟蒔絵手文庫」 (Ashifune Maki-e Te-bunko)

and signed/sealed “Shushu,” providing confirmation of authorship and provenance.
