Yaka Power Figure (Nkisi) Democratic Republic of the Congo, beginning 20th century Wood, beads Height: 33,5 cm Provenance: Former collection Pierre Dartevelle Bruxelles Collection Line et Hippoliet Verbeemen, Bonheiden A finely carved Yaka nkisi figure from southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo, culturally related to neighboring Angola. The sculpture displays the characteristic Yaka features: a powerful head with pronounced coiffure, a compact forward-leaning stance, and strong, expressive facial modeling. The surface shows a rich, glossy ritual patina developed through prolonged handling and ceremonial use. The beaded necklace, associated with ritual activation and protection, remains intact. Formerly part of the notable Dartevelle and Lin & Hypollite Verbemen collections. Comparable works from the Verbeemen collection have appeared at Christies april 2024 "Living with African and Oceanic Arts"
