Byôbu 屏风(折叠屏风) - 金箔、木材、纸、镀金金属 - 日本 - Taishō period (1912-1926)
A charming tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen), featuring a painting of an expansive pine tree forest 松 (matsu) spread across a gently hilly beach landscape, set against a luminous gold-leaf speckled background. Along the right edge, an inscribed poem is signed and sealed by the poet:
“A musical gathering at Miho no Matsubara.
A fisherman chanced upon a celestial maiden’s arrival.
She danced in rainbow robes with feathered sleeves.
An eternal melody played, drifting softly on the breeze.
A fleeting moment from beyond the heavens.”

The imagery strongly evokes the legend of the celestial maiden 天女 (tennyo) descending at Miho no Matsubara—a famous pine grove near Mt. Fuji. The scene aligns with the classical Noh play Hagoromo 羽衣 (“The Feathered Robe”), in which a fisherman discovers a tennyo’s robe, and she performs a celestial dance to retrieve it.
Painted in colour and ink on gold-leaf speckled paper. The panels are mounted in a brown lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective gilt metal hardware.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Total width: 379.6 cm (2x 64.6 cm, 4x 62.6 cm); Height: 171.6 cm
Considering its age the screen is in a very good condition with traces of restorations and some traces of wear consistent with age. Reverse with some re-papering. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single work of art.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
