Ancient Ceremonial Drum – Jakai Region, South Papua
Field Collected – Extremely Rare
An exceptional and ancient ceremonial drum from the Jakai region, South Papua, field collected during early contact. Drums of this type are of great cultural importance and were used in ritual contexts, ceremonial gatherings, and communication.
The elongated wooden body is hand-carved from a single trunk and shows deep patination, surface wear, and age-related characteristics consistent with long-term indigenous use. The sculptural quality is powerful and understated, reflecting the aesthetic language of the region. The drumhead (if present – aanpassen indien nodig) is traditionally mounted and secured according to local practice.
Objects from the Jakai area are seldom encountered on the international market. Authentic field-collected examples of this age and integrity are particularly rare.
A museum-worthy example of South Papuan ceremonial art.
Provenance: Field collected in the Jakai region, South Papua.
Condition: Consistent with age and ritual use..
