The motif references the popular myth of 登龙门 (Dēng Lóng Mén), or the “Ascending the Dragon Gate.” According to legend, the Dragon Gate lies atop a powerful waterfall descending from a mythical mountain. Although countless fish attempt to swim upstream against the current, only a few succeed in leaping over the falls; those that do are transformed into dragons. The narrative functions as a metaphor for scholarly perseverance and social advancement, hence the enduring idiom comparing examination candidates to carps striving to cross the Dragon Gate.
