有田染付锦『Kobana』花纹大型花瓶,藤井金彩制作 - 瓷 - Fujii Kinsai / 藤井錦彩 (b. 1976) - 日本 - Heisei period (1989-present)
A spherical form where hundreds of hand-painted blossoms rest quietly on a deep blue ground, creating a rhythmic, meditative surface.
Description:
This impressive large Arita porcelain vase presents a generous, rounded body rising to a short, slightly flared neck with a wide mouth—an archetypal decorative form designed to emphasize volume, balance, and presence.
The exterior is completely covered in a meticulously hand-painted Sometsuke-Nishiki “Kobana” (small blossom) pattern, composed of countless circular flower motifs in white, yellow, and green on a deep blue ground. Each bloom is articulated with radiating lines suggesting petals, repeated with remarkable consistency in size and spacing. The result is a rhythmic, meditative surface where the pattern reads as a continuous field across the curved body—an effect that demands extraordinary control in both brushwork and firing.
The interior is finished in a smooth white glaze, providing a crisp contrast to the richly decorated exterior. The base is cleanly glazed in white and bears the underglaze-blue two-character mark “錦彩” (Kinsai); the unglazed foot reveals the fine white porcelain body characteristic of Arita ware.
Cultural & Art Context:
Arita porcelain has been produced in Kyushu since the early 17th century and remains one of Japan’s most internationally recognized ceramic traditions. Sometsuke-Nishiki refers to the pairing of underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze enamels, allowing both depth and brilliance of color. All-over repeating floral patterns such as this have long been valued for their ability to transform a vessel into a continuous decorative field—where ornament becomes structure, rhythm, and surface.
Institutional Reference:
A closely related vase by Fujii Kinsai with the same Sometsuke-Nishiki “Kobana” pattern is held in the British Museum (registration no. 1994,0415.1, acquired 1994). This work is a different size but shares the same decorative concept, underscoring the artist’s established repertoire and the pattern’s recognized standing in major public collections.

Artist Profile:
Fujii Kinsai (1905–1988) was a prominent Arita porcelain artist active throughout much of the 20th century. Born in Saga Prefecture, he worked within the rich tradition of Arita ware, particularly specializing in 染錦 (sometsuke-nishiki) techniques that combine underglaze blue with overglaze polychrome enamels. Fujii received recognition for his technical mastery and contributed to the continuation of Arita's ceramic heritage during the postwar period. His works are noted for their precision in decoration and adherence to classical Arita standards while incorporating personal artistic refinement.
