珍稀一对日本能乐面具——Chūjō 与 Kojō,附丝绸袋 - 木 - 日本 - Heisei period (1989-present)
Item Description
A distinguished set of two fine Japanese Noh theatre masks (能面, Nomen), presented together with their original silk storage bags (shifuku). This exceptional pair comprises a Chūjō (中将) mask — representing a young male aristocrat — and a Kojō (小尉) mask — depicting a refined elderly man, the latter complete with flowing white horsehair.
Mask 1 — Chūjō (中将 / Young Nobleman)
The Chūjō mask portrays the spirit of a young male courtier, traditionally modelled after the Heian-era poet Ariwara no Narihira. Rendered in warm ivory-beige with finely inked brows, a shaved hairline at the forehead, expressive black-and-red-rimmed almond eyes, and red-painted lips revealing carved teeth, this mask embodies the aristocratic refinement of the Heian court. Delicate ink brushwork depicts a moustache and beard. The red braided silk cord (himo) for securing the mask to the performer's face remains intact. The reverse is lacquered in glossy black, bearing a gold-painted maker's hanko (seal) and the characters 大平 (Taihei), identifying the mask-maker.
Mask 2 — Kojō (小尉 / Elderly Man)
The Kojō mask represents a dignified elderly man, used in Noh to embody a god in mortal form or the spirit of a venerable old tree. Carved with exceptional skill, the amber-toned surface is richly textured with finely incised wrinkles across the forehead, cheeks, and around the mouth. The eyes are narrow and gentle, the lips red, and the teeth carved in natural ivory tones. The mask is adorned with bound tufts of white horsehair (shiro-ke) at the crown and a long flowing white beard and mustache of natural fiber. The reverse bears a black lacquer interior with gold-ink inscription reading 小尉 (Kojō) and a date in the Heisei era (Heisei-nen-gatsu, 平成〇年〇月), confirming this is a modern-era hand-crafted work of high quality.
Both masks are accompanied by their original shifuku (仕覆) — protective silk storage bags — indicating these were created and preserved with the care befitting theatrical or collectors' pieces. The set represents a complementary pairing: youth and age, the courtly and the divine, united in the aesthetic tradition of Japanese Noh theatre.
