The sculpture shows a clear Egyptian influence, a style that the Phoenicians adopted and spread throughout the Mediterranean. It is a hollow figure, which was common to allow gases to escape during firing.
It represents a male figure, probably a priest or a protective deity. These figures usually appear wearing long tunics that can reach down to the ankle and with arms close to the body or bent at right angles. They served as votive offerings (sacred gifts) placed in shrines or necropolises to link religion with trade and divine protection.
Provenance: Formerly in the M. S. collection, Beirut, acquired from Asfar & Sarkis, Beirut, in 1964; acquired from an archaeological gallery in New York, USA, in 2017.
Exhibited: Ifergan Collection museum, Málaga (2023-2025)
Published: "Swipwrecked gods, the phoenician route from tyre to Malaka", pag. 62.
