France, Nancy, Art Nouveau period, circa 1895 to 1905. - Emile Galle was one of the key masters of the Ecole de Nancy, the movement officially founded in 1901 to unite art and industry through design. - This vase belongs to the botanical tradition that defined Gallé’s work, where nature became a modern language for French decorative arts at the turn of the century. - Technique: multi layered (cased) glass, then the decor is revealed by acid etching to create a true cameo effect and depth. - Acid etching allowed Gallé to model several tones in one object and to obtain sharp, controlled silhouettes, a signature approach in his production. - The samaras (maple keys) motif fits the Art Nouveau taste for plants in motion and seasonal cycles, and reflects Gallé’s well known interest in botany and natural observation. • Decoration: samaras and foliage in yellow green tones over a warm orange ground, with a long tubular neck and flared rim. • Signed “Gallé” on the body. • Height: 29.5 cm.
