Item Description
武用 真 Buyo Shin(1935- )
This is a remarkably large and commanding Bizen-ware (Bizen-yaki) tokkuri-style flower vase — a rare find at this scale — representing the ancient Japanese unglazed stoneware tradition from Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (Nihon Rokkoyo).
Standing at an impressive 28 cm tall with a generous 20 cm diameter, this is an exceptionally large example of Bizen ware. Pieces of this size require considerable skill and experience to throw and fire successfully, as the substantial mass of unglazed stoneware demands precise control throughout the entire process — from forming on the wheel to surviving the long, high-temperature wood kiln firing. The bold, full-bodied silhouette commands presence in any space, making it as much a sculptural statement piece as it is a functional vase.
The surface tells the story of the kiln: a deep, glowing terracotta red at the base — the result of direct flame contact — transitions through warm lavender and blush tones into a sandy, mineral-dusted ochre on the broad shoulder and neck. This atmospheric gradient is achieved entirely through natural wood-ash kiln effects, the prized hidasuki (fire flashing) and sangiri effects, without any applied glaze whatsoever. The generous, rounded belly amplifies the drama of these color shifts, offering a sweeping canvas for the fire's artistry that a smaller piece simply could not achieve.
The form is boldly confident: a full, weighty belly tapering gracefully into a slender neck, crowned with a wide, flat everted rim. The unglazed surface retains a deeply satisfying rough tactility across its expansive surface area, dotted with fine sand particles and showing the gentle horizontal striations of wheel-throwing. The neck interior reveals a warm burnt-orange tone, contrasting beautifully with the sandy exterior collar.
The base bears the potter's impressed seal (inkansen), attributed to Buyo Shin, a recognized Bizen ware ceramicist listed in the official Bizen-yaki Potter's Seal Register. The piece comes without original box or documentation.
At 2,120 g, this substantial piece has a satisfying heft that speaks to the quality and thickness of the clay body. Bizen ware of this scale and presence is genuinely rare on the international market — a bold, museum-worthy centerpiece for any serious collector of Japanese ceramics or wabi-sabi aesthetic objects.

Artist Profile
武用 真 Buyo Shin(1935- )was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1935 — the very heartland of Japan's most ancient unglazed stoneware tradition. Having spent his entire life rooted in Bizen, he developed a deep and intimate understanding of the local clay, the wood-fired kiln, and the unpredictable natural effects that define authentic Bizen ware. He is listed in the official Bizen-yaki Potter's Seal Register (Bizen-yaki Navi), confirming his standing as a formally recognized ceramicist within the Bizen tradition. His son, Buyo Takashi (born 1970), has followed in his footsteps and is also an active Bizen ware ceramicist — a testament to the multigenerational commitment to craft that the Bizen tradition demands. Working entirely without glaze, Buyo Shin's pieces rely on the kiln's natural fire effects — ash deposits, flame scarring, and atmospheric reduction — to achieve their distinctive and unrepeatable surface character.
