Global Money Week – “From Barter to Banknotes”-Dawn of currency
This coin, a fine Imperial antoninianus of Gordian III, represents a denomination introduced in the 3rd century and named after Emperor Caracalla, which circulated widely across the Roman Empire. As with many early coinages, the intrinsic value of the silver was closely tied to its face value.
