A lovely six-panel hina’byôbu 雛屏風 (doll festival folding screen) featuring an alluring landscape painted in the Kanô School style. The scene centres on a female golden pheasant 錦鶏 (kinkei) standing on a raised patch beside a quiet stream, surrounded by varied seasonal foliage. Blue and white bellflowers 桔梗 (kikyō), bamboo 竹 (take), a Japanese apricot tree 梅 (ume) with red blossoms, and narcissus 水仙 (suisen) appear around and behind the bird, while across the water stand several chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku). The composition is enveloped by misted, speckled gold-leaf clouds. Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper with gold-leaf details, and set within a brown lacquered wooden frame fitted with gilded metal hardware. Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (second half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width 74.6 cm (2 × 12.7 cm, 4 × 12.3 cm); Height 31.6 cm.
