Plaque “The Clermont. Baltimore. 1801”
Exceptional colonial British campaign bureau in koa wood, made in the early 20th century. Plaque “The Clermont. Baltimore. 1801”.
The British Empire reached its peak between the 19th and 20th centuries, covering territories in Africa, India, Asia, the South Pacific and North America, exposing colonists to a wide variety of design influences in furniture. This is why British colonial furniture fuses classical English elegance (Georgian and Victorian styles) with exotic materials and the functionality needed for tropical climates. It is characterized by solid dark woods (teak, mahogany, ebony), use of rattan, bamboo and leather, with robust yet streamlined designs.
Much of it was specifically designed to be portable and travel-ready furniture, the so-called “campaign furniture” characteristic of the era, influenced by the culture and climate of the places where the British settled as they were sent across their empire to manage colonial affairs. They carried their traditional pieces of decoration and furniture, which eventually mixed with local materials and styles.
These are the features we find in this spectacular bureau, conceived as a robust, functional piece that is also aesthetically refined. The warm mahogany veneer is enhanced by the gilded brass hardware, carefully arranged. Fold-out compartment with tooled leather writing surfaces over small storage spaces, removable trays… In addition to the large registers or drawers arranged along the rest of the front of the piece.
This style, synonymous with elegance, is already considered a classic. Its history is felt in every detail, bringing character and presence to any space.
The shipment of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight and destination. Shipping costs include professional, custom-made packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty. DUE TO THE PIECE’S DIMENSIONS, IT IS PREFERRED TO ARRANGE SHIPPING WITH THE BUYER. CURRENT COSTS ARE ESTIMATED.
The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller’s disclaimer regarding possible customs charges, as these are collected in the destination country and the amount to be paid is determined by that country’s customs. If an export permit is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost depends progressively on the export value of the work.
