INDUS VALLEY STATUS OF IDOL
hollow terracotta terracotta idol in the shape of a bell, adorned with attached arms, breasts, raised eyebrows and facial features, and recessed rows of dots.
This fertility idol in hollow terracotta is hand-molded, with a hollow conical body, firm breasts supported by a curving arm and a slender neck.
The abstract face of the figure consists of a prominent nose, pierced oval eyes, and an uplifted headband surrounding its domed head.
Fertility idols of this type were produced for the first time in the Near East in the 9th millennium BC.
Fertility figures were found across the region, made in various materials, stone and terracotta being the most common.
Many similar sculptures were unearthed in decorated rooms serving as sanctuaries in southern Anatolia, in the Indus Valley and in the Near East (Canaan).
Some of these statues were venerated in the sanctuaries, others may have been votive offerings deposited by worshippers.
