→ 8.2 cm long and 5.1 cm wide Otodus Auriculatus teeth
It is beautiful Otodus Auriculatus teeth in with length towards higher end of 8.2 cm. It features the characteristic uneven & prominent serrations both in the main body and in the cusps. There is also a tiny cusplet next to the left cusp and it is indicated in the photos. Th bourlette of the teeth is mostly covered in white lines which are found on both side of the body. These white lines are attributed to plant roots which interact with the fossil during prolong fossilization process resulting in those streaks of white lines. The root of the teeth is highly curved, prominent and unequal which again is hallmark of Auriculatus teeth. The tip of the teeth is eroded probably due to fossil retrieval operation but despite the overall profile of the teeth is stable and robust. The teeth can lean back on its roots making it very nice to look at.
Otodus Auriculatus was an enormous shark and could reach lengths upto 9.5 meters (31 feet) and lived during lived during the Eocene to Oligocene epochs, roughly 56 to 34 million years ago and it could take down prey like arge bony fish, sea turtles, other sharks, and marine mammals. It is very important shark and lies in the middle of the journey of Otudus shark family when peaked at Otudus Megalodon and unfortunately ended there around 3.6 Million years ago. Since, Otodus Auriculatus and Otudus Sokolovi shark teeth can be very similar and some authors regard these two sharks as one, so its possible that this teeth belong to Otudus Sokolovi but as mentioned earlier, to our know-how and knowledge we think it belong to Otodus Auriculatus.
Based on our inspection it seems that the teeth is in natural state.
Please refer to photos for reference of this gorgeous and mysterious looking teeth.
