Delft - 大厅长凳 - 木, 粘土
This ca. 1900 Dutch hall bench belonged to my grandparents. I took it out of their Koninginnegracht 29 (The Hague) cellar to furnish my first apartment in the early 2000’s.
It features 6 beautiful Delft tiles without corner motifs and visible nail holes present in opposite corners, used by artisans to hold the clay in place during cutting. Images feature, a bird with flowers, a basket, a town with church steeple, fruit, grapes, apples, a farm or house, a bridge I believe.
The tiles were popular during their time for being simple, involving simple scenes such as birds, flowers & animals without any corner ornamentation at all. I cannot check the thickness of the tiles.
The wooden pieces underneath is hand carved with two lion heads at either side & flowers in each corner of the two arches at the back.
A gorgeous museum piece.
Due to the crack below the searing I wouldn’t sit on it anymore, however we did used to sit on it.
The wooden pieces underneath are original but were treated for woodworm in 2007 & then painted. The color has since gone a bit towards purple.
Pick up only in The Hague, Archipelbuurt, The Netherlands.
