A piece of the past, made to be worn
Rare Viking Age Open Axe Pendant
Stylized open axehead pendant; the body rises from a broad base and divides into two arms forming a “V”-shaped structure that allows the suspension cord to pass freely through the upper section. Within Viking Age symbolism the axe is associated with martial identity, strength, and protection; although less common than Mjölnir, the hammer of the Norse god Thor, axe-shaped pendants are interpreted as personal ornaments with possible amuletic significance in early medieval Scandinavian culture
Object Type: Axe-shaped pendant / amulet (open-form)
Cultural Attribution: Viking culture (iconographic assessment)
Period: Viking Age, ca. 9th–11th century AD
Material: Copper-based metal alloy (likely bronze)
Dimensions:
Height: 19.5 mm
Width: 12.9 mm
Weight: 1.97 g
