Description:

First edition of A Cidade e as Serras (The City and the Mountains), the last novel by Eça de Queiroz (1845–1900), published posthumously in 1901 by Livraria Chardron, Lello & Irmão, Porto. One of the most significant works of Portuguese Realist literature, in which Eça poetically contrasts the urban civilisation of Paris with the natural life of the mountains of Trás-os-Montes.

Full dark green leather binding with gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine. The frontispiece features a photographic portrait of the author with a facsimile of his signature. The title page bears the Chardron publisher's monogram and the date 1901. The pages show natural age-related yellowing consistent with the period.

The copy bears a stamp from Livraria Leia (Rua Quintino Bocaiuva, São Paulo) and an oval ownership stamp (Mello, Barrosa & C.ª, São Paulo), testifying to the circulation of this edition in Brazil.

Binding shows visible wear at the corners and head of the spine. A rare edition of great interest to collectors of Portuguese literature.

Premier édition de A Cidade e as Serras (La Ville et les Montagnes), le dernier roman d'Eça de Queiroz (1845–1900), publié à titre posthume en 1901 par la Livraria Chardron, Lello & Irmão, Porto. L'une des œuvres les plus significatives de la littérature réaliste portugaise, dans laquelle Eça oppose poétiquement la civilisation urbaine de Paris à la vie naturelle des montagnes du Trás-os-Montes.

Reliure pleine peau vert foncé avec lettres dorées et nerfs saillants au dos. Le frontispice présente un portrait photographique de l'auteur avec fac-similé de sa signature. La page de titre porte le monogramme de l'éditeur Chardron et la date de 1901. Les pages présentent un jaunissement naturel dû à l'âge, caractéristique de l'époque.
