Decorated with refined gold maki-e on a deep black lacquer ground, each bowl features an elegant “Meigetsu” (bright moon) design, presenting poetic seasonal scenes under moonlight. The motifs reflect the traditional appreciation of nature and the changing seasons, creating a calm and sophisticated atmosphere for formal table settings. The decoration incorporates maki-e and nashiji techniques. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface. The set is finished in kuro togidashi style, a technique in which the design is built up in layers of lacquer and then polished to reveal the pattern with a smooth, unified surface. This set is attributed to the renowned lacquer artist Kimura Hyosai (木村表斎), born in Ōmi (now Shiga Prefecture) or the second-generation Hyosai. He moved to Kyoto at an early age and trained under the lacquer master Shibata Tobei. Hyosai was known for producing fine tableware, excelling especially in elegant black lacquer finishes, as well as skilful works in Negoro-style red lacquer and maki-e decoration. He has long been regarded as one of the distinguished masters in the tradition following Sano Chokan, and his artistic lineage was continued by his younger brother Yasaburo, who later became the second-generation Hyosai. The inside of the box lid bears the title, the artist’s signature, and a seal. The side of the wooden box also has the name of the former owner written on it. Good to fair antique condition. While the set is remarkably well-preserved for its age, there are signs of wear including minor scratches and a few small lacquer chips on the rims or bases, as shown in the detailed photos. The black lacquer ground has faded in areas, giving parts of the surface a slightly brownish tone. There are also some small areas where the lacquer has slightly lifted. The wooden storage box shows blemishes and insect damage. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
