【Product details】
This powerful and elegant Showa-period sumitori (charcoal container) for the tea ceremony is the work of Kurita Genshiku, a distinguished member of a Kyoto bamboo-crafting lineage spanning over ten generations. The Genshiku masters are celebrated for their technical precision and artistic sensibility, and their works have been historically favored by high-ranking tea masters, most notably Yabunouchi Togetsusai of the Yabunouchi school.
The piece is titled "Karasuso-kago" (烏双篭). It features a sophisticated, dark-stained bamboo weave with a rhythmic, tight pattern that demonstrates the artist's mastery. The interior is finished with a deep black lacquer, creating a bold contrast with the textured exterior. This vessel is designed to hold the charcoal used during a formal tea gathering, serving as both a functional tool and a centerpiece of rustic elegance.
The Kurita family is one of Kyoto's most prestigious names in bamboo art. For centuries, they have supplied exquisite bamboo utensils to the tea elite. Owning a piece by Genshiku is a mark of connoisseurship in the world of chanoyu.
The container is housed in its original signed wooden storage box, which bears the artist’s handwritten title, signature, and seal, ensuring its provenance.
The charcoal container is in good to very condition with some lifting of the black lacquer on the interior in several areas. The wooden box shows signs of age, and the lid has developed a slight warp. Please refer to the photos for details.
