A unique triangularly shaped stone celt from the north coast of Papua, an object of considerable cultural and historical importance. Stone celts such as this were not merely utilitarian tools but functioned as highly valued prestige and exchange objects.
Along the north coast of Papua, finely made stone celts played a significant role in traditional systems of wealth and social relations. They were frequently used as bride price payments and in other important exchanges that marked alliances, marriages, and the settlement of obligations between families and communities.
The unusual triangular form distinguishes this example from the more commonly encountered shapes, making it a particularly interesting and desirable piece. Objects of this type were carefully preserved and circulated within networks of trade and ceremonial exchange, giving them a history that extended far beyond their original manufacture.
