A very large and elegant French Boulle rococo-style mantel clock. France, Napoleon III period, mid 19th century. Case decorated with marquetry: brass foliage on the background of the red tortoiseshell, with rich garniture of gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts. Very impressive clock in excellent condition, the case just restored! Dimensions: height - 73 cm; width - 36,5 cm; depth - 15,4 cm. Origin: France, mid 19th century, Napoleon III (1848-1870) period. Louis XV (rococo) style violin-shaped wooden case glassed on front, decorated with marquetry - precisely cut and engraved brass foliage on the background of red tortoiseshell, with rich garniture of gilt bronze finely chiseled mounts. The movement installed in the top part of the case, behind the glassed door, a big gilt bronze mount with a herub in lower part. A large gilt bronze figure depicting the Archangel Michael with a flaming sword in one hand and trumpet in other on top. The case is supported on four gilt bronze legs. A large (20,6 cm dia.) dial on relief-decorated bronze gilt ground depicting King Louis XIV of France in the middle and fleur-des-lilles (symbol of Bourbon monarchy) surrounded by 12 white enamel cartouches with blue Roman numerals for hours and smaller cartouches for minutes with blue Arabic numerals (each five). Openwork, superbly chiseled hands with kind of stars in mid part. French Parisian movement of a good technical quality with the round maker's stamp: S. Marti et Cie / MEDAILLE DE BRONZE. Samuel Marti was awarded with bronze medal once only (in 1860), manufacturer was allowed to use the trophy for 10 years, it allows me to date the clock precisely to be made between 1860-1870. On the left side retailer's stamp: POCCARD Mce / PARIS. In lower part a very low serial number: 4902 and pendulum parametres: 7/2. The clock comes with a heavy and large pendulum with Medusa's mask on sunburst ground made of gilt bronze. Winding key, bell and key to the door included. Conditions report: case in good condition for the age, traces of old restorations, no uplifted nor missing brass inlays, some age-related wear to the tortoiseshell. Gilt bronze mounts complete, very clean, wear to gilding in places (mostly convex). Dial in excellent condition, some chips and repairs to Arabic numerals.
