Objects of this type were used in ritual contexts among the Asmat of southwest New Guinea, where the deep vibrating sound produced by the spinning bullroarer was associated with the voices of ancestral spirits. The pronounced phallic form reflects themes of fertility, male power, and initiation, concepts that played an important role in Asmat ceremonial life. When swung on a cord, the object produces a powerful humming sound that carried through the forest and ceremonial grounds, often during ritual gatherings or initiation rites. This example shows clear signs of age and use, adding to its authenticity and character.
