A Japanese tsuba with a finely carved nami chidori (waves and plovers) motif. The plate appears to be of brass, with a darkened patina and detailed relief carving showing dynamic waves and birds in flight. Dimensions: approx. 6.93 × 6.08 cm Thickness: approx. 0.45 cm at the seppa-dai Weight: approx. 114.3 g The tsuba is unsigned. The exact period of manufacture is uncertain, and it is therefore offered conservatively as a Japanese tsuba of unknown period. A paulownia wood box is included; however, the box is of modern manufacture and is not original to the tsuba. Condition: visible surface dirt, age-related wear, rubbing, and patina irregularities. No major damage to the carving is apparent from visual inspection, but please study the photographs carefully for your own impression of condition. This is an attractive decorative piece with a lively traditional Japanese nami chidori design.
